Hiring a remote SEO team for a Japanese website: scope, rates and reporting
What technical, content and link-building specialists should deliver for a business competing in Japan.

Three roles, one roadmap
Technical SEO, content and link earning need different skills; combining them in one person usually means one of the three gets ignored. That matters in Japan, where competitors in manufacturing, gaming and e-commerce usually invest in all three.
A workable offshore desk for a mid-sized Japanese site is a strategist, a technical specialist and a writer: roughly 100 to 160 hours a month between them, from $18 per hour. For manufacturing, gaming and e-commerce sites, add a specialist reviewer for industry claims.
Localising for Japan
Content for Japan needs Japanese. Yahoo! Japan still has a meaningful share (it uses Google's results), and content needs native Japanese writers.
Give writers local competitor examples, JPY pricing and real customer questions from Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka, then have someone in-market sign off each page.
What good reporting looks like
Report on Search Console clicks and impressions by section, organic conversions and a written explanation of each change, not just rank positions. Filter Search Console to Japan so traffic from other countries doesn't flatter the numbers.
Agree the reporting schedule before work starts: a monthly written review and a quarterly roadmap reset, timed around Golden Week, Obon and the New Year holidays.
Avoiding the cheap-links trap
Bulk link packages create risk, not authority. Ask for digital PR, real editorial mentions and a documented outreach list. In Japan, local press, industry associations and partners in manufacturing, gaming and e-commerce are the natural places to start.
Write the standard into the contract: no private blog networks, no mass-produced content and no keyword-stuffed anchor text. Links that look unnatural to Japanese readers will also look unnatural to Google.
Key takeaways
- Staff technical SEO, content and authority as separate roles.
- Localise for Japan: Japanese, local pricing and a native reviewer.
- Report clicks and conversions from Japan, not just positions.
- Ban volume link packages in the contract.
